Reflections on the 2024 Sustainable Gambling Conference: A Sector Ready to Move Forward – Nils Anden, CEO, FDJ UNITED Online Betting & Gaming

04 July 2025

The 2024 Sustainable Gambling Conference in Brussels was a powerful reminder of just how far the industry has come – and how much potential there is to do more when we work together.

For me, one of the standout takeaways came from Neil Banbury, Chief Marketing Officer at FDJ UNITED:

“At times, the media landscape can feel polarised, but when you bring organisations together in one room, we quickly identify shared objectives.”

That perfectly captured the tone of the event. Despite differing roles and responsibilities, there was clear alignment on the need for safer, fairer, and more transparent gambling experiences. Operators, regulators, academics, and advocacy groups came with open minds and a shared sense of purpose.

What made the day particularly impactful was its honesty. The agenda didn’t dodge difficult topics – whether affordability checks, regulatory complexity, or the role of AI in harm reduction. But conversations were practical, not performative. There was a real willingness to listen and learn.

Sustainability is no longer a side conversation in our sector- it’s central to how success will be defined going forward. Protecting players and building trust is essential to long-term growth.

As I look ahead to the 2025 event, I’m encouraged. Encouraged by the progress already made, and by the sense of momentum that’s building. If we continue to bring the right people into the room – and stay focused on solutions, not just signals – we can make real, lasting change.
